THE OPPORTUNITY
Barwon Health is seeking an outstanding clinical leader to join its Women’s, Children’s and Families Directorate as Director Women’s Services. This is a unique opportunity to provide leadership to a high-performing Obstetrics and Gynaecology service within one of Australia’s largest and most comprehensive regional health services.
As the senior medical leader for Women’s Services, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of maternity and gynaecology care across the organisation. Working closely with the Clinical Director and executive leadership team, you will contribute to strategic planning, workforce development, clinical governance and service transformation during a period of significant growth and investment.
THE ROLE
Reporting to the Clinical Director, Women’s, Children’s and Families Directorate, the Director Women’s Services provides medical leadership and oversight of Obstetric and Gynaecology Services across Barwon Health.
The role is responsible for ensuring excellence in clinical governance, quality and patient safety, while fostering a culture of accountability, innovation and continuous improvement. The Director will lead the development of clinical policies and standards, oversee service performance and risk management processes, and ensure compliance with professional and regulatory requirements.
The position also provides leadership to the medical workforce, including recruitment, workforce planning, credentialling, succession planning and professional development. Working collaboratively across specialties and departments, the Director will champion new models of care, drive service improvement initiatives and strengthen integration across the patient journey.
In addition, the successful candidate will support research, education and training activities, promote consumer-centred and culturally safe care, and utilise data and digital systems to inform service planning and performance improvement whilst maintaining an appropriate clinical workload.
THE CANDIDATE
The successful candidate will be a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG), or hold an equivalent specialist qualification, with substantial experience as a specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist.
You will bring demonstrated success leading clinical teams within complex healthcare environments, together with strong expertise in clinical governance, quality improvement and patient safety. Your ability to influence and engage stakeholders, build high-performing teams and drive strategic service development will be well established.
The ideal candidate will combine sound clinical judgement with a collaborative leadership style and a commitment to evidence-based practice, education and innovation. Experience within a tertiary or large regional health service and previous senior medical leadership experience will be highly regarded, as will postgraduate qualifications in leadership, management or a related discipline.
Most importantly, you will be passionate about delivering exceptional outcomes for women and families while contributing to the continued development of a progressive, inclusive and values-driven health service.

- Aged care through the McKellar Centre and its sites in North Geelong and Charlemont.

Role Specification
This role provides medical leadership for Obstetric and Gynaecology Services and contributes to the strategic leadership of Women's Services through clinical governance, workforce leadership, service planning and quality improvement initiatives. The role also forms part of the leadership team for the broader Women’s, Children’s and Families Directorate. This is the busiest regional maternity service in the state with over 3,000 deliveries a year in a Level 5 maternity and Neonatal service. Comprehensive outpatient gynaecology care is complemented by same day and multiday surgery. It is a RANZCOG training site with trainees appointed to our own ITP as well as on rotation from metropolitan units and locally appointed Senior Registrars. Barwon Health is nearing completion of a $500million+ women’s and children’s acute health facility.
Clinical Governance and Service Leadership
- Provide leadership and oversight of Obstetric and Gynaecology Services across Barwon Health.
- Lead the development, implementation and review of clinical policies, guidelines and standards based on evidence-based best practice.
- Monitor service performance, quality indicators and patient outcomes and implement improvement strategies where required.
- Foster a culture of clinical excellence, accountability, innovation and continuous improvement.
- Ensure internal and statutory reporting requirements (e.g. to CCOPMM) are met.
- Support achievement of organisational, directorate and service objectives.
Medical Workforce Leadership
- Provide professional leadership, support and oversight of medical staff within Obstetrics and Gynaecology Services.
- Contribute to workforce planning, recruitment, succession planning and retention strategies.
- Support credentialing, scope of practice, mandatory training and professional development processes.
- Address workforce issues in accordance with organisational policies and procedures, including through performance management processes as required.
- Promote a positive, inclusive and respectful workplace culture.
Strategic Planning and Service Development
- Contribute to strategic planning and future service development initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to improve access, efficiency, quality and sustainability of services.
- Lead or support implementation of new models of care and service improvement initiatives.
- Build collaborative relationships across specialties and departments to enhance patient care and service integration.
Quality, Safety and Risk Management
- Oversee the timely and effective review of clinical incidents, adverse events, complaints and identified risks relevant to Obstetric and Gynaecology Services.
- Monitor key safety and quality indicators and oversee implementation of improvement actions.
- Participate in clinical governance committees and accreditation activities.
- Ensure compliance with legislative, professional and organisational requirements.
Research, Education and Innovation
- Promote research, education and innovation across Women's, Children’s and Families Services.
- Support clinical audit, research activity and the incorporation of evidence-based best practice into clinical service delivery.
- Foster learning and development opportunities for medical staff and trainees, including oversight and maintenance of specialty College accreditation.
Consumer Participation and Cultural Safety
- Champion person-centred, culturally safe and inclusive healthcare practices.
- Support consumer engagement in service design, evaluation and improvement initiatives.
- Promote equity, diversity and inclusion for patients, families and staff.
- Ensure services align with Child Safe Standards and Barwon Health values.
Information Management
- Ensure compliance with information management, privacy and confidentiality requirements.
- Promote accurate clinical documentation and data quality, including overseeing documentation and coding audits as required.
- Utilise data and digital systems to monitor performance and support service improvement.
Occupational Health and Safety
- Ensure workplace health and safety requirements are met across the service.
- Promote safe systems of work and compliance with organisational policies.
- Support injury management, hazard identification and risk mitigation activities.
- Foster a culture of safety and wellbeing for staff, patients and visitors.
Other Duties
- It is expected that the Director would maintain a clinical load (specifics dependent on the individual)

- Participate in organisational initiatives, committees and special projects as required.

- Senior Clinical Leadership in Women’s Health
Demonstrated experience as a specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, with a proven track record of providing strategic and operational leadership within complex maternity, obstetric and gynaecological services, including the ability to lead multidisciplinary clinical teams and deliver high-quality patient outcomes. - Clinical Governance, Quality and Patient Safety
Extensive experience in clinical governance and the oversight of quality, safety and risk management frameworks, including the ability to monitor service performance, manage clinical incidents, drive continuous improvement and ensure compliance with relevant professional, regulatory and accreditation standards. - Medical Workforce Leadership and Development
Demonstrated capability to lead, mentor and develop medical workforces, including workforce planning, recruitment, succession planning, credentialling, scope of practice oversight, performance management and fostering a positive, inclusive and high-performing workplace culture. - Strategic Planning and Service Development
Proven ability to contribute to strategic planning and lead service development initiatives, including the implementation of innovative models of care, service redesign and programs that improve access, efficiency, sustainability and patient outcomes. - Stakeholder Engagement and Collaborative Leadership
Highly developed communication, influencing and relationship management skills, with demonstrated success building effective partnerships across clinical specialties, executive leadership teams, external health providers, professional bodies and community stakeholders to achieve organisational objectives. - Research, Education and Clinical Innovation

Demonstrated ability to champion person-centred, culturally safe and inclusive healthcare services, incorporating consumer participation into service design and promoting equity, diversity and inclusion for patients, families and staff. - Professional Credentials and Leadership Capability
Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG) or equivalent specialist qualification, with current eligibility for specialist registration and, preferably, postgraduate qualifications and/or senior leadership experience within a tertiary healthcare environment.
