  • Be part of an executive team committed to creating exceptional care together
  • Live and work in Australia’s happiest city with the highest average income, some of the shortest commuting times and good access to services and green spaces

The organisation

Canberra Health Services (CHS) provides acute, subacute, primary and community‐based health services, to the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and surrounding region through the delivery of high quality, effective, person-centred care. CHS strives to be a health service that is trusted by our community through creating exceptional health care with our team members, patients, families and carers. CHS is strengthening health and wellbeing services and facilities to ensure that the health care needs of Canberrans are met today and into the future. Significant planning and construction of infrastructure is underway to fulfill this ambition.

Services in CHS include the Canberra Hospital providing trauma services and most major medical and surgical service, North Canberra Hospital offering acute and subacute services, the University of Canberra Hospital which is a rehabilitation facility that offers additional outpatient services, Clare Holland House providing public palliative care services, Walk-in Cantres providing free treatment for minor illness and injury, community health centres and community based services and ACT Pathology.

ACT Pathology provides specialist pathology services at Canberra Hospital, North Canberra Hospital, University of Canberra Hospital, National Capital Private Hospital and in the community through collection centres located across Canberra. We also offer a home collection service for patients who are frail or unwell and are not able to attend our collection centres. We have two laboratories located at the Canberra Hospital and North Canberra Hospital. Both laboratories are accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) in conjunction with the Royal College of Pathologists Australasia (RCPA).

The role

The Director of Pathology is responsible for the delivery of critical pathology services to Canberra and the surrounding region, directing the successful operations of the region’s major public pathology service. This role presents a unique opportunity for the right candidate to lead the design of a brand-new build for the service and expand the footprint of services through partnerships and the continued implementation of the Digital Health Record, ensuring that the service is leading edge and sustainable into the future.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, the role provides high level advice on operational matters and the role of the pathology service in achieving excellent patient outcomes, a positive team culture, and in contributing to the achievement of the CHS strategic plan. The role is responsible for maintaining high quality relationships with key stakeholders, including clinicians and the community, and providing exemplary leadership to all Pathology team members ensuring that consultation and teamwork based on CHS values are encouraged throughout the organisation.

The candidate

Whilst the ACT Public Service executive capabilities will form the basis for the assessment of candidates, if you are the right candidate for this role you will:

  • Have high level experience in managing a complex health service (whilst experience in Pathology may be an advantage it is not a requirement).
  • Demonstrate a proven track record of leading cultural transformation in a complex environment, with the ability to engage staff of all classifications and diverse backgrounds to work together for the continued quality and sustainability of the service.
  • Be able to form the partnerships and connections that enable you to work autonomously and also identify when to reach out for assistance.
  • Have a proven track record of achieving results through finding a path to innovate rather than accept the status quo.
  • Demonstrate proven high level critical thinking, governance, budget and resource management skills.
  • Have relevant qualifications.

Relocation

If you need to relocate the ACT government provides one of the most attractive Executive relocation allowances in Australia.

The Canberra Hospital Expansion

The ACT Government is expanding the Canberra Hospital to include a new Critical Services Building at the existing hospital campus in Woden.

Construction of the new facility began in 2021 and is expected to be completed in 2024.
